Antimicrobial agents are the second most commonly prescribed group of medications in the United States. The overwhelming majority of such prescriptions in community practice are for the treatment of acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), including rhinosinusitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, otitis media, and non specific URTIs, despite the fact that viruses cause most of these illnesses. This widespread use of antibiotics has contributed to the spread of antibiotic.
