Legionella pneumophila is a leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia. It has been estimated that 8000–18,000 people are hospitalized with legionellosis annually in the United States. Moreover, Legionella is particularly frequent among patients with community-acquired pneumonia who require admission to an intensive care unit.
