Legionnaires disease (LD) is an acute pneumonia caused by Legionella species, a rod-shaped, gram-negative bacillus that is ubiquitous in aquatic reservoirs. Twenty-eight years after it was first detected, large, focal outbreaks of LD continue to occur worldwide. Sincetheearly1990s,thetreatmentofchoicehasshifted from erythromycin to newer macroazolides or fluoroquinolones.
