Abstract

The predominant clone in Quebec is identical to a Clostridium difficile strain with novel virulence factors. fluoroquinolones were the most important risk factor for Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea during a large epidemic caused by a hypervirulent strain of Clostridium difficile. Control of Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea requires a reduction in the use of fluoroquinolonesandofintermediaterisk antibiotics and shorter durations of therapy for common infections.
