Immuno suppression, including that which occurs following bone marrow transplantation, potentially results in the reactivation of infections that are otherwise latent or controlled by effective immune surveillance. Although development of surface and core antibodies and loss of surface antigen following acute hepatitis B virus infection is thought to represent clearance of the virus, evidence exists to support the possibility that the virus may remain latent within the liver.
